My daily skate takes me along the northern reaches of North Bay Road, one of the spines of this long, skinny island. The pavement is smooth and excellent, there are few cars, and it’s even a city-approved bike path. NBR runs from 63rd street in the north down to about 20th street south – although around 41st street there’s a section of winding around a major auto route to negotiate.
If you like Beautiful People, try Lincoln Road Mall – but keep your speed down because it’s chock full of pedestrians. This isn’t so much skating as gawking. Ocean Drive from 14th street down to 5th street is the one pictured in film and television. The road is tough on skaters because it’s narrow and usually clogged with cars… but just beachward is a nice cement path by the sea wall that’s excellent and winds through palm trees.
But why not see all of this and more with hundreds of other skaters at the Great EsSkate in February? Go to www.skatemiamibeach.com for info, and see you in sunny Florida!
